White Sox Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Posted on 03 September 2010 by Baseball Share

Beginning Friday, all eyes will turn to new White Sox designated hitter Manny Ramirez, who will be back in Boston to play against the organization that he helped lead to two World Series titles.

“It will be interesting,” manager Ozzie Guillen said of Ramirez’s weekend homecoming.

It always seems to be with Ramirez.

The slugger became public enemy No. 1 in Boston midway through the 2008 season, as Red Sox Nation felt that Ramirez was quitting on the team. The organization obviously agreed, trading him to the Dodgers.

He returned to Boston as a member of the Dodgers back in June, and while some fans initially applauded his return, but the boos outweighed the cheers.

CC Sabathia pitched one-hit ball for eight innings to earn his major league-leading 19th win, fill-in Curtis Granderson homered twice and New York beat Oakland 5-0 on Thursday for a four-game sweep. Sabathia (19-5) gave up Mark Ellis' clean single leading off the second. Jonathan Albaladejo completed the combined one-hitter in the ninth.

Chris Sale: Is Chicago’s Fireballer Already The Steal Of The 2010 MLB Draft?

Posted on 02 September 2010 by Baseball Share

Chris Sale was one of the many top-level college pitchers being looked at in the 2010 MLB Draft.

I was hoping, as a Cleveland Indians fan, that they would select Sale with the fifth pick. Instead, they went with Drew Pomeranz.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets then drafted Barret Loux and Matt Harvey, respectively, as Sale continued to fall.

After the Blue Jays drafted Deck McGuire, considered the most major league-ready pitcher at the time, the White Sox drafted Chris Sale with the 13th pick.

While the rest of these pitchers have yet to start their careers, and while Loux ended up failing a physical, Sale is already on the White Sox roster, and so far has pitched well for them.

In his first 10 appearances, without pitching in the minors, Sale has allowed one earned run in ten innings with an ERA of 0.90, to go along with a save, seven walks, and 16 Ks.

Doubly good for him is that since he’s the only left-hander not hurt on the White Sox roster, we’ll be seeing more of him down the stretch.

This begs the question… how did he slide so far in the draft? Perhaps Ozzie Guillen just saw something in him that nine other managers and scout groups missed.

He said himself in a blog by Doug Padilla, “They showed 10 seconds [of Sale] and I told [GM] Kenny [Williams], ‘This kid is better than what we have.’ I didn’t know him. I saw him for 10 seconds.”

Was the secret for his rapid ascent something as simple as being fine with the move to the bullpen?

I would have to imagine most first-round starting pitchers drafted would be at least somewhat reluctant to move to the bullpen, at least immediately. After all, they’ve been starters for many years, that’s what they know.

What the answer is, I don’t know. What I do know is that Chris Sale has already become a draft steal. Falling as far as he did, yet already pitching as well as he did, is a rare occurrence.

Only four players from the 2009 draft class have made it to the majors (all college pitchers, hint hint).

All have pitched well, but for Sale to adjust to major league life this quickly is a treat.

To be able to produce for a team trying to get in the playoffs is perhaps an even greater treat.

In the year of the rookie and the year of the pitcher, this rookie pitcher’s story is just as amazing as anyone else’s. I’m hoping for a great career out of him, as I’m sure the White Sox are as well.

Manny Ramirez goes 1-for-3 in White Sox debut (SportingNews.com)

Posted on 01 September 2010 by Baseball Share

Manny Ramirez, hitting fifth and serving as the DH, was 1-for-3 with a single and a strikeout in his Chicago White Sox debut Wednesday. He also was hit by a pitch. Ramirez was acquired earlier this week via a waiver claim from the Los Angeles Dodgers and was in uniform Tuesday. Despite coming to the on-deck circle in the ninth inning, however, he didn't have an at-bat Tuesday. The slugger grounded out in his first at-bat Wednesday and struck out his next time up.

White Sox beat Indians 6-4 in Manny’s debut (AP)

Manny Ramirez packed his equipment into three large, blue travel bags with script "Dodgers" on the sides. Dressed in a pink shirt and plaid suit, he fiddled with his dreadlocked hair, for the moment safe from a barber's scissors. His dragged-out debut for Chicago finally over, Ramirez left Cleveland for Boston, the next stop on his first road trip with his new team.

Chicago White Sox: Defense Might Keep Them from 2010 MLB Playoffs

Posted on 01 September 2010 by Baseball Share

With the White Sox committing three errors, two of which by shortstop Alexei Ramirez, in their come from behind victory against the Indians, not even Manny Ramirez, who is not known for his defense could help the Sox in that department.

This year has been the first since 2006 that the White Sox will most likely finish in the top half of the majors in defense. This could be attributed to different things, such as Gordon Beckham’s move to second base from third, the addition of Alex Rios and even the addition of Juan Pierre in left field (not normally known for his defense).

The problem with this is that the Sox have often given away games earlier in the season to costly errors and committed very few errors during their tremendous turn around which landed them in first place for a while. But costly defensive mistakes have cost their starters and relievers innings.

Their biggest competition in the division, the Minnesota Twins have cause them a lot of grief, as the Sox have committed nine of their 77 team errors against the division rival. To make things even worse for the Sox, in the last five years the team with the better record held a better fielding percentage and fewer errors (exception was 2008 with the playoff game, both teams had an equal amount of errors).

If history will repeat itself again this year, the Sox have quite a mountain to climb as the Twins have the best fielding percentage (.989) and fewest errors of any American League team (56) and tied for the best fielding percentage among all teams in the major leagues.

Manny gets a hit, is hit in White Sox debut (AP)

Posted on 01 September 2010 by Baseball Share

Manny Ramirez has a hit and has been hit in his debut with the White Sox. Ramirez blooped a single to right field leading off the seventh inning of his first game with Chicago, which claimed the 12-time All-Star on waivers for the playoff chase. In the ninth, one batter after Paul Konerko hit a three-run homer to put Chicago ahead 5-4, reliever Justin Germano struck Ramirez in the back with a…

The Chicago White Sox have recalled three minor leaguers on the first day teams can expand their rosters. Pierzynski’s homer sends White Sox past Indians (AP)

Posted on 31 August 2010 by Baseball Share

Manny Ramirez grabbed one of his bats, waved it only the way he can, and simply stood in the on-deck circle. That was all the White Sox needed from him. With Ramirez waiting to make his debut for Chicago a few feet away, A.J. Pierzynski connected for a tiebreaking, three-run homer off Frank Herrmann in the ninth inning to lift the White Sox to a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.
