There’s no question who Detroit’s closer is. It’s Jose Valverde.

The same guy who had a sub-1.00 ERA the first half of the season has allowed 19 runs (17 earned) in 18 post-All-Star break appearances.

He gave up three hits and hit a batter in the 10th inning Monday to lose his latest decision. Only six times since the break has Valverde notched a scoreless appearance. He has a 7.29 ERA in the season’s second half.

“I’m not concerned about Valverde at all,” manager Jim Leyland said. “He’s our closer.”

He might not be if Detroit had a viable alternative. Or if Valverde were not under contract for next season.

Leyland is nothing if not loyal to his players, but Valverde could use some time to get straightened out so he can feel good about himself going into…
